If
you are interested in cancer, a visit to this site will give you information
concerning a project on cancer between Laval University in Quebec City and
Norman Bethune University in Changchun, People's Republic of China. During
a ten-year period, a cancer network was established which includes all aspects
involved in the total management of cancer, prevention, early diagnosis,
treatment, palliative care, etc. It is based on the concept of an oncology
unit located in a general hospital and composed of a multidisciplinary team
including physicians, nurses, epidemiologists, cytopathologists, and technicians
trained in cancer-related fields. Suggestions
and comments are welcome. Laval University Located in the heart of Quebec's historic capital city, Université Laval is one of Canada's leading universities. Among the top ten Canadian universities in terms of research, it received more than 100 million dollars in 1998-1999 for research and international cooperation. Université Laval traces its origins back to 1663 when Monseigneur de Laval, the first bishop of New France, founded the Séminaire de Québec. A Royal Charter creating Université Laval was granted to the Séminaire de Québec by Queen Victoria in 1852. A few years later, in 1878 Université Laval opened another campus in Montreal. This "Montreal branch" became the University of Montreal in 1920. As Canada's first university, Laval was the very first place in North America to offer higher education in French. It has been a pioneer in program assessment and strategic planning, and its 1992-1997 master plan sets out goals for management and services for both the academic and administrative sectors. As of fall 1998, Université Laval had over 350 programs at three levels of study and 35 800 students. Web Site: www.ulaval.ca |

Norman-Bethune University Norman Bethune Uninversity of Medical Sciences (NBUMS) is an institution of higher learning directly subordinate to the Ministry of Health of China. It was founded in September 1939 in Tang County, Hebei Province, in the Shanxi-Chahaer-Hebei Military Area. NBUMS was named after Dr. Norman Bethune who participated in its early founding and the establishment of its teaching and medical resources. National leaders of the older generation including Zhu De, Nie Rongzhen and Deng Xiaoping successively inscribed the name of NBUMS and words of commemoration in Chinese calligraphy for the university. Dr.Jiang Yizhen and Dr.Qian Xinzhong, two former Ministers of Health of China, were once presidents of the university. Professor Li Yulin is the President of the University at present. For sixty years since its establishment, nearly 30,000 medical students have graduated from NBUMS. In addition, it has trained more than 3,900 health professionals in six-month or one-year training programs in different medical areas. Recently, Norman Bethune University, along with four other Changchun universities has been merged with Jilin University. A new structure has been created, but the name of Norman Bethune has been retained. Web Site: www.nbums.cc.jl.cn |
